How to choose a driving instructor

When learning to drive it's very important to choose the right instructor for you. Different people will learn better with different instructors so it's important that you find one that suits your learning style and personality.

Check they're DVSA registered

All driving instructors who charge for lessons must be registered with the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). They'll have a green badge that shows they are a fully qualified ADI (Approved Driving Instructor). This is a legal requirement.

Ask about their experience

Ask how long they've been a driving instructor and what their first-time pass rate is. A well-established instructor with a high pass rate is a good indicator of quality teaching.

Consider a female driving instructor

Some learner drivers may feel more comfortable with a female driving instructor. RED has female instructors available in many areas across the UK.

Consider your learning style

Think about what kind of learner you are. Speak to potential instructors and ask how they tailor lessons to individual students.
