Theory Test Case Studies
A scenario-based section of your theory test that puts your road knowledge into practice. Here's what to expect and how to prepare.
PRACTISE WITH THE APPWhat are theory test case studies?
The DVSA driving theory test includes a case study section within its 50-question multiple-choice paper. You are presented with a short real-world driving scenario — a few paragraphs describing a situation on the road — followed by five questions relating specifically to that scenario.
All five questions in the case study must be answered using the context of the scenario provided, combined with your knowledge of the Highway Code and safe driving practices. The same pass marks apply throughout the multiple-choice section: you need 43 out of 50 to pass.
What does a case study look like?
Below is an example of the type of scenario and questions you might encounter:

Case study scenarios are drawn from a wide range of real driving situations. Common themes include:
How to prepare for the case study questions
Case study questions test applied knowledge rather than simple recall. You cannot memorise answers — you need to understand the principles behind safe driving and be able to apply them to unfamiliar scenarios. The best preparation involves:
- Reading the full Highway Code and understanding the reasoning behind each rule
- Practising scenario-based questions using the RED app's case study module
- Reading each scenario carefully before attempting the questions — the scenario contains clues
- Treating each question in isolation — do not let your answer to one question influence another
- Revisiting any topics where you answer practice questions incorrectly to understand why
Case Study FAQs
The theory test multiple-choice section contains 50 questions in total. One of those questions is presented as a case study — a short scenario followed by five questions specifically related to it. This means case study questions account for five of the fifty questions in the test.
The format is the same — multiple choice — but case study questions require you to read and understand the scenario before answering. The correct answer is always supported by the scenario provided and the Highway Code. Read the scenario carefully before attempting any of the five questions.
Yes. Like all questions in the multiple-choice section, you can flag case study questions and return to them before submitting your answers at the end of the 57-minute session.
The scenarios are realistic representations of genuine driving situations, designed by the DVSA to reflect the types of challenges drivers face on UK roads. They are not based on specific real events, but they are grounded in real driving conditions and the Highway Code.
The RED Learn To Drive With RED app includes a dedicated case study practice module with realistic scenarios and guided answers. You can also find case study practice questions in the official DVSA Theory Test Kit. Both are strongly recommended as part of your preparation.
