What to expect from your driving lessons

Whether you're a complete beginner or returning to driving after a break, your RED driving lessons are structured to help you progress at the right pace. Every lesson is tailored to your individual needs and current ability level.

Your instructor will follow the DVSA-approved syllabus, working through skills in a logical order — from basic car controls in a quiet area to complex situations on busy roads, dual carriageways and eventually test-standard driving.

Bay Parking

Drive-in, reverse-in and forward exit bay parking, as assessed on test.

Reverse Parking

Parallel and reverse bay parking techniques for real-world situations.

Motorway Driving

Lane discipline, joining, overtaking and safe following distances at speed.

Emergency Stop

React quickly and safely to a sudden hazard without loss of control.

Dual Carriageway

Build confidence on faster roads with correct lane use and overtaking.

Highway Code

Signs, markings and rules that govern every driving test and road trip.

How long are driving lessons?

Most RED driving lessons are one or two hours long. Longer lessons are more productive as they give you time to practise skills without constantly stopping and starting. Your instructor will advise on the best session length for your current stage of learning.

How many lessons will I need?

The DVSA recommends an average of 45 hours of professional instruction plus around 22 hours of private practice before taking your test. However, this varies greatly between individuals — your RED instructor will give you personalised guidance on your progress after each lesson.

Driving Lesson Guide FAQs

What should I wear to a driving lesson?
Wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict your movement. Flat-soled shoes are recommended — high heels or flip-flops can make it difficult to feel the pedals properly. Avoid wearing very long or loose trousers that could catch on the pedals.
Do I need to bring anything to my lesson?
You must bring your valid provisional driving licence to every lesson. Your instructor will ask to check it before your first session. It's also a good idea to bring a bottle of water, especially for longer lessons.
Can I practise between lessons?
Yes, and it is strongly recommended. Private practice with a qualified full licence holder (who has held their licence for at least 3 years) helps reinforce what you learn in lessons and can reduce the total number of paid lessons you need.
What if I can't finish the lesson for personal reasons?
If you need to end a lesson early, simply tell your instructor. Any unused time from a pre-paid lesson block can be carried forward to a future session or refunded in line with RED's no-quibble refund policy.
