DRIVING LESSONS FOR BEGINNERS
Start your journey with confidence.
Your first driving lessons with RED are designed to build confidence and skills at your own pace — from your very first move to test-ready standard.
BOOK ONLINEStarting your driving journey
Your first few driving lessons are all about building familiarity with the car and gaining basic control. There is no rush — your RED instructor will set the pace and move on to new skills only when you're ready.
In your first lesson you'll typically cover: getting comfortable in the car, adjusting your mirrors and seat, understanding the basic controls, and moving off and stopping safely in a quiet area. You won't be on main roads from the start — your instructor will find a suitable area where you can practise without pressure.
What beginner lessons cover
- Cockpit checks — mirrors, seat, headrest, seatbelt
- Understanding the controls and instrument panel
- Moving off and stopping smoothly
- Steering control and road positioning
- Basic gear changes (manual) or use of selector (automatic)
- T-junctions, crossroads and roundabouts
- Observation and hazard awareness
- Manoeuvres: parking, reversing, emergency stop

How many lessons do beginners need?
The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional tuition on average, though many learners need more or fewer depending on how quickly they progress. The important thing is not to rush — it's safer and cheaper in the long run to be well prepared before taking your test.
Before your first lesson
You must have a valid provisional driving licence before your first lesson. You will also need to provide your RED instructor with a DVLA check code to confirm your licence details. See our applying for a provisional licence and proving entitlement to drive guides for more information.
