Starting your driving journey

Your first few driving lessons are all about building familiarity with the car and gaining basic control. There is no rush — your RED instructor will set the pace and move on to new skills only when you're ready.

In your first lesson you'll typically cover: getting comfortable in the car, adjusting your mirrors and seat, understanding the basic controls, and moving off and stopping safely in a quiet area. You won't be on main roads from the start — your instructor will find a suitable area where you can practise without pressure.

What beginner lessons cover

  • Cockpit checks — mirrors, seat, headrest, seatbelt
  • Understanding the controls and instrument panel
  • Moving off and stopping smoothly
  • Steering control and road positioning
  • Basic gear changes (manual) or use of selector (automatic)
  • T-junctions, crossroads and roundabouts
  • Observation and hazard awareness
  • Manoeuvres: parking, reversing, emergency stop

How many lessons do beginners need?

The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional tuition on average, though many learners need more or fewer depending on how quickly they progress. The important thing is not to rush — it's safer and cheaper in the long run to be well prepared before taking your test.

Before your first lesson

You must have a valid provisional driving licence before your first lesson. You will also need to provide your RED instructor with a DVLA check code to confirm your licence details. See our applying for a provisional licence and proving entitlement to drive guides for more information.

Beginner Driving Lessons FAQs

What should I expect from my first driving lesson?
Your first lesson will focus on getting you comfortable in the car and learning the basic controls. You will not be put on busy roads immediately — your instructor will find a quiet area to start.
What do I need to bring to my first lesson?
You must bring your provisional driving licence to every lesson. Your instructor will verify it before you drive. It's also a good idea to wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes.
Is it normal to feel nervous before my first lesson?
Absolutely. Most new drivers feel nervous before their first lesson. Your RED instructor is trained to help you feel at ease and will progress at a pace that works for you.
Can I take automatic lessons as a beginner?
Yes. Many beginners opt for automatic lessons as they allow you to focus on road awareness without the added challenge of clutch control. See our Automatic Driving Lessons page for more details.
How often should I take lessons as a beginner?
Most learners benefit from one or two lessons per week. This gives you enough time to absorb what you've learned between sessions without forgetting key skills.
