Why take motorway driving lessons?

Since June 2018, approved driving instructors (ADIs) have been legally permitted to take learner drivers on motorways. This is a voluntary lesson — you're not required to take motorway lessons before passing your test — but many learners find they are invaluable for building confidence on fast roads.

Even experienced drivers can feel anxious about motorways. RED's motorway lessons help you understand lane discipline, safe following distances, joining and leaving the motorway, and how to handle unexpected situations at speed.

Joining the Motorway

Using the slip road correctly to merge with fast-moving traffic confidently and safely.

Dual Carriageways

Understanding lane discipline, speed limits and safe overtaking on dual carriageways.

Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre

Applying MSM consistently at higher speeds with greater forward planning required.

Emergency Procedures

What to do if your vehicle breaks down or you experience a tyre blowout at motorway speeds.

Variable Speed Limits

Smart motorway signs, variable limits, and how to respond to red X signals overhead.

Lane Discipline

Correct use of lanes, keeping left, and safe overtaking and returning to the left lane.

Who are motorway lessons for?

Motorway lessons are open to learner drivers (with a provisional licence) who have already passed their theory test, as well as qualified drivers who want a refresher on faster roads. They must be taken in a dual-controlled car with an ADI — not a standard qualified driver — and the instructor must agree to take the learner on a motorway.

Motorway Driving Lessons FAQs

Can learner drivers go on the motorway?
Yes, since June 2018 learner drivers with a provisional licence can drive on motorways, but only in a dual-controlled car with an approved driving instructor (ADI) who agrees to take them. You cannot go on a motorway with a family member or friend.
Do I have to take motorway lessons before passing my test?
No. Motorway lessons are entirely voluntary. The DVSA introduced them to better prepare new drivers for real-world fast road conditions, but they are not assessed as part of your practical driving test.
Are motorway lessons suitable for qualified drivers?
Yes. Qualified drivers who feel anxious about motorways can book refresher motorway lessons with a RED instructor. These sessions focus on confidence and the specific skills needed for fast-road driving.
What age do I have to be to take a motorway lesson?
You must be 17 or older to take a motorway lesson as a learner. You must also have already passed your theory test before your ADI can take you onto a motorway.
How long is a motorway driving lesson?
Motorway lessons are typically 2 hours long to allow sufficient time travelling to and from the motorway and practising the relevant skills. Your instructor will advise on the best duration for your needs.
