Roundabout rules

At a roundabout, traffic already on the roundabout has priority over traffic waiting to enter. Give way to the right. Use the correct lane on approach based on your intended exit and signal correctly as you approach and leave. Never change your lane suddenly on the roundabout itself.

Which lane should I use?

As a general rule: for the first exit (turning left), approach in the left lane and signal left. For going straight ahead, approach in the left lane and signal left after passing the exit before yours. For the third exit or beyond (turning right), approach in the right lane, signal right on approach and change to a left signal after passing the exit before yours.

Give Way to the Right

Traffic already on the roundabout has priority. Always give way to vehicles coming from your right before entering.

Lane Selection

Choose the correct approach lane based on your exit. Look for road markings and signs — they show which lane to use for each exit.

Signalling

Signal left on approach for exit 1. Signal right on approach for exits 3+. For exit 2, signal left after passing exit 1.

Mini Roundabouts

Mini roundabouts work on the same principle but the painted circle can be driven over. Give way to the right and keep it moving.

Multiple Lane Roundabouts

On large roundabouts, stay in your lane. Do not change lanes on the roundabout. Check your mirrors before exiting.

Speed on Approach

Approach at a speed that allows you to give way smoothly if needed. Arriving at the correct speed prevents harsh braking at the line.

Common roundabout mistakes

The most common errors include failing to give way to the right, signalling incorrectly, choosing the wrong approach lane, cutting across lane markings on the roundabout, and forgetting to signal when exiting. Practise on a variety of roundabout sizes and layouts to build confidence before your test.

Roundabout FAQs

Who has priority at a roundabout?
Traffic already on the roundabout has priority over traffic waiting to join. Give way to the right at the entry point.
When do I signal at a roundabout?
Signal right on approach if you are taking the third exit or beyond. Signal left when you pass the exit before yours. For the first exit, signal left on approach. For exit 2, no approach signal — signal left after passing exit 1.
What if I take the wrong exit?
Go around the roundabout again. Do not reverse or make a sudden change of direction — continue to the next safe exit and correct your route calmly.
Can I cross a mini roundabout?
Yes. Mini roundabouts have a painted circle that can be driven over if necessary. The same priority rules apply — give way to the right.
