What are theory test case studies?

Case studies were introduced to the driving theory test as a way of testing your ability to apply Highway Code knowledge to realistic driving situations, rather than simply recalling isolated facts. You will be presented with a short scenario — for example, a driver on an unfamiliar road at night — and then asked a series of questions about how to handle the situation safely and legally.

How many case study questions are there?

The multiple-choice part of the theory test includes 50 questions. Up to three of those questions may be presented as a case study — a short passage describing a driving situation followed by related questions. The rest of the questions are standard multiple-choice. All 50 questions are drawn from the official DVSA question bank.

Real-World Scenarios

Case studies describe realistic driving situations you could face as a new driver — read carefully before answering.

Up to 3 Questions

Each theory test may include a case study with up to three linked questions. All are worth one mark each, just like standard questions.

Based on Highway Code

Answers are always based on Highway Code rules and DVSA guidance. Solid Highway Code knowledge is the best preparation.

Read the Scenario Carefully

Case study questions require careful reading. Details in the scenario — weather, time of day, road type — often directly affect the correct answer.

57 Minutes for 50 Questions

You have 57 minutes for the entire multiple-choice section. Don't rush — case study questions reward careful, methodical thinking.

Pass Mark: 43 out of 50

You need to score at least 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice section to pass, regardless of which questions are case study format.

How to prepare for theory test case studies

The best preparation is a thorough understanding of the Highway Code combined with practice questions. When reading a case study, identify the key facts — road type, conditions, the actions of other road users — and apply Highway Code rules to each question. Avoid relying on common sense alone; the correct answer is always the one supported by the Highway Code.

Theory Test Case Study FAQs

What is a case study in the theory test?
A case study is a short driving scenario presented at the start of a block of linked questions in the multiple-choice part of the theory test. You read the scenario and then answer up to three related questions.
How many case study questions will I get?
You may get up to three questions presented as part of a case study. They count towards your total of 50 questions and the pass mark of 43.
Are case study questions harder than normal questions?
Not necessarily harder, but they require you to apply your knowledge to a specific context rather than recall a fact in isolation. Thorough revision makes them straightforward.
Can I flag case study questions to come back to?
Yes. The test software allows you to flag any question and review it before submitting. Use this if you are unsure and want to revisit after completing the rest of the paper.
