Frequently asked questions

How many lessons will I need as a beginner?
The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice. The exact number varies based on how quickly you pick things up and how regularly you practise between lessons.
What age can I start learning to drive?
You can begin lessons at 17, but you must hold a provisional driving licence first. You can apply for your provisional licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday.
What happens on my very first lesson?
Your instructor will meet you at an agreed location. The first lesson covers getting comfortable with the car — controls, cockpit drill, and basic moving and stopping on quiet roads. Everything moves at your pace.
Do I need to bring anything?
Please bring your provisional driving licence to every lesson — your instructor must check it before you begin. The car, dual controls and all equipment are provided by your instructor.
Do I need a provisional licence to start?
Yes, a provisional driving licence is a legal requirement before taking lessons on public roads. RED has a helpful guide on how to apply if you need assistance.
Can I choose my instructor?
Yes! When booking with RED you can search by postcode and select an instructor whose availability and style suits you best.
