Why choose manual driving lessons?

Passing your driving test in a manual car gives you the most flexible licence available. A manual driving licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic vehicles — meaning you'll never be restricted to just one type of car.

Manual cars remain the most common type on UK roads and are generally cheaper to buy, fuel and maintain than automatic equivalents. If you plan to drive a range of vehicles throughout your life, a manual licence is the more practical long-term choice.

What do manual driving lessons cover?

Your manual driving lessons with RED will follow the DVSA-approved syllabus and cover:

• Cockpit drill, mirror checks and pre-drive safety routine
• Clutch control, biting point and smooth gear changes
• Moving off, steering and road positioning
• Junctions, roundabouts and complex road situations
• Dual carriageway and faster road driving
• Parking manoeuvres: parallel, bay and reverse parking

Manual vs automatic — which should you choose?

The right choice depends on your goals. If you want the flexibility to drive any car, choose manual. If you find the clutch difficult to manage or want to pass as quickly as possible, an automatic lesson might suit you better — just be aware of the 78 restriction that limits your licence to automatic vehicles only.

How long will manual lessons take?

On average, the DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional tuition before taking your test. Your RED instructor will monitor your progress and give you an honest assessment of when you're ready to test.
